The NPMC is a rigorous, part-time, virtual program for mid- to senior-level news professionals seeking the product strategy, technical expertise, and change management skills needed to create value for their audiences and organizations. As the industry’s first certification dedicated to news product management, we have successfully trained over 140 alumni across 35 countries, creating a consolidated community of practitioners who are currently redefining newsrooms at The New York Times, Reuters, Lookout Local, NPR, The 19th, BBC, Der Spiegel, and more.

Our curriculum is built specifically around the realities of news organizations and the unique pressures, constraints, and opportunities that define product work in journalism.  

The program takes you from strategy to execution, covering everything you need to thrive in a news product leadership role. You'll learn how to identify audience needs and business opportunities and transform them into actionable insights, as well as how to develop and execute a product strategy. From there, we dive into technical skill-building: covering data management, user experience, and aligning the tech, design, and engineering sides of things, alongside developing revenue strategies and sustainability. Finally, the program rounds out with product leadership skills: how to lead cross-functional teams, sharpen your communication, articulate your product vision, and work effectively with key stakeholders. Throughout every module, we examine how AI is reshaping product workflows and what it means for the role, with a clear focus on the strategic thinking, judgment, and human expertise that no tool can replace.

Every lesson is taught by senior practitioners actively working across tech and news — from organizations like The Atlantic, Netflix, Chicago Public Media, and Yahoo News — ensuring the curriculum stays grounded in what's actually happening in the field. Past sessions have included:

Ensuring Revenue Sustainability with a Clear Monetization Strategy: Analyzing core and complementary revenue models to help participants evaluate and implement the approaches that best fit their product's mission.

Navigating AI as a Product Leader: Identifying opportunities to integrate AI into product workflows and developing foundational technical knowledge to support collaboration on AI-powered products.

Aligning Product Strategy with Tech and Engineering Capabilities: Learn to bridge the gap between product management and engineering teams by understanding engineering processes, terminology, and constraints. 

Navigating Newsroom Culture and Managing Stakeholders: Developing strategies to improve product execution by effectively communicating with diverse stakeholders.

This blend of expertise ensures that participants gain a baseline of technical knowledge immediately applicable to the unique constraints of the news industry.

Each cohort participates for 3.5 months in weekly live virtual sessions with experienced news product professionals. They also have access to reading materials, instructor-led discussions, and coaching sessions with experts. At the end of the program, participants present a final project that showcases their ability to lead strategic decision-making for a news product and receive a certificate of completion.
