Meet the upcoming cohort of the News Product Management Certification

30 news professionals will attend 3.5 months of classes with top product experts from the industry

The News Product Alliance is happy to announce the second cohort of the News Product Management Certification! The NPMC is our state-of-the-art training program guiding mid-to senior-level news professionals in refining product strategy, enhancing technical expertise, and building leadership skills under the mentorship of media and tech industry experts.

The curriculum covers multiple facets of product management in the news industry, from understanding audience needs and business opportunities to developing news product solutions and leading with influence. This program was created by the NPA in partnership with the J+ program at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY.

The NPMC Fall 2024 Cohort is made of 30 news product thinkers from United States, Argentina, Brazil, Canada, Cuba, Germany, Hong Kong, Italy, Japan, Moldova, Puerto Rico, Spain, United Kingdom, and Venezuela. Participants hold titles such as Head of Product, Homepage Editor, Audience Strategist, among others. See the full list below.

Over 3.5 months, starting September 2024, they will improve their product strategy, technical expertise, and change management skills with industry experts from the news and technology industries. “This program not only provides the participants with product knowledge and skills, but also effectively empowers the next generation of industry leaders to create sustainable and resilient news organizations. We're proud to offer this opportunity again", said Feli Carrique, executive director of the News Product Alliance.

By the end of this program, participants will master key methodologies in product strategy development and management used by top newsrooms and technology companies. They will apply these frameworks within their own newsrooms and present a final project that demonstrates their ability to lead strategic decision-making for a news product, earning a certificate of completion.

With the generous scholarship support from The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, we were able to lower the barriers to state-of-the-art news product training and incorporate product thinkers from small newsrooms. This funding is specifically directed to local and historically underserved communities in the United States, contributing to a more inclusive and equitable news ecosystem.

“Armed with cutting-edge methodologies and leadership skills, the participants in this program are poised to drive innovation, lead strategic initiatives, and seize new opportunities in the dynamic media industry. We have already seen graduates from the first cohort receive promotions and take on more product roles. We can’t wait to see how our newest cohort also advances their career in news product management,” Marie Gilot, executive director for J+, said.

With a Net Promoter Score of 90, the first NPMC cohort has already shown transformational impact in the industry and we will continue to offer the program in 2025. If you're interested in joining the program, mark your calendars: applications will open on October 11, 2024!
