Our programs
The News Product Alliance helps close the gap between what audiences need and what newsrooms can sustainably deliver by building product capability across the field. Our programs support every level of the news industry: practitioners, leaders, and news organizations alike. Each layer reinforces the next: stronger practitioners build stronger organizations, and stronger organizations raise the standard for the whole ecosystem.
The programs below put that mission into practice.
Community.
NPA runs the largest network of news product practitioners, with a deliberate push to ensure that network reflects the communities it serves. We believe news product practitioners figure things out faster and stay in the field longer when they're not doing it alone. That’s why our community programs are designed for interactivity and collaboration, so practitioners can share ideas, learn from each other, and advance the field together.
NPA Summit(annual): Each year, NPA brings together 400+ news product practitioners from around the world for our flagship convening. The Summit is where the field comes to share what's working, build the relationships that outlast any single conference, and collaborate on solutions to the audience challenges every newsroom is facing. Unlike single-track journalism conferences, the Summit is built specifically around product practice – sessions dig into the operational and strategic work of building news products, not just the editorial outcomes they produce. The impact compounds well beyond the event itself: partnerships formed at the Summit have led to shared tools, cross-newsroom collaborations, and career moves that strengthen the field's talent pipeline.
NPA Slack (year-round): A free, moderated community of 3,000+ members, including product managers, journalists, developers, data scientists, and media-adjacent professionals from around the world. Built around an Ask/Give model, everyone who joins is encouraged to seek support and share what they know, regardless of title or experience level. The community gives practitioners a space to exchange practical advice, surface emerging challenges, and stay connected to peers navigating the same work. Members also have access to a job board connecting news product professionals with opportunities across the industry.
Community calls(quarterly): Community calls are interactive, knowledge-sharing sessions led by members of the NPA community on topics shaping the field, such as strategic foresight, first-party audience data, and similar emerging challenges. They serve practitioners who can't always make it to in-person convenings, giving the broader NPA network a lower-lift way to stay connected and keep learning between Summits. Practitioners bring their own challenges and hear directly from peers navigating the same issues, rather than just absorbing expert advice from a single speaker. The result is a steady cadence of shared learning that keeps the network active and useful year-round.
Training
Through our News Product Management Certification and other career development programs, NPA builds a pipeline of news leaders with the specific skills – such as understanding audience needs, translating them into strategy, and navigating operational and technology trade-offs – to deliver sustainable news products. We deliberately invest in people from backgrounds underrepresented in news leadership, on the theory that who holds these roles shapes what gets built.
News Product Management Certification (biannual): The NPMC is the news industry's first certification dedicated to product management, having trained over 150 alumni from 35 countries across five cohorts. The program equips practitioners with product frameworks and processes, technical fluency, and change-management skills needed to develop strategy and lead through an industry in constant, increasingly AI-influenced change. What sets NPMC apart from generic product management certifications is that it's built specifically for journalism's constraints: the ethics, the business model pressures, and the editorial-product tension that don't show up in a standard tech-sector PM curriculum. NPMC alumni have gone on to step into Chief Product Officer roles, lead website rebuilds and app launches, and build AI-powered tools now live in newsrooms across multiple countries.
Capacity - building
NPA works directly with newsrooms to develop durable product operations that outlast any single program. Our capacity-building programs help news organizations translate audience understanding into strategy, set clear priorities, and operate as product-led teams.
GNI x NPA Ai-Powered Next Gen News Sprint(2026): A structured, eight-month program developed with the Google News Initiative, the Sprint guides 12 local news organizations through the full arc of building for next-generation audiences – from understanding how those audiences discover and use information to shipping AI-powered products designed to reach them. Unlike one-off AI workshops or vendor demos, the Sprint is a hands-on build process: participating newsrooms leave with shipped products, not just strategy decks. It's designed for local news organizations navigating the operational and resource constraints of building AI products without dedicated product or engineering teams. Lessons and playbooks from the Sprint feed back into NPA's broader training and capacity-building work, helping the rest of the field move faster on AI-powered audience engagement.
NPAI Co-Lab(2025–present): The Co-Lab is a community-led initiative developing open-source AI infrastructure to tackle one of journalism's most urgent challenges: understanding and engaging audiences. Rather than each newsroom building or buying disconnected, proprietary tools, the Co-Lab pools resources and expertise across participating organizations to build shared, open infrastructure the whole field can use and improve on. It serves news organizations looking to build durable, in-house audience data and AI capability rather than depending indefinitely on outside vendors. The Co-Lab's distinct value is its open-source, community-governed model – a sharp contrast to the proprietary AI tools most newsrooms are otherwise stuck choosing between, which often lock them into vendor relationships that don't serve their specific editorial or audience needs.
