Meet the Third Cohort of the News Product Management Certification

31 news professionals will spend 3.5 months learning from top product experts in the industry.

The News Product Management Certification is back with its third cohort! Designed for mid-to-senior-level news professionals, this intensive training program—run by the News Product Alliance in partnership with the J+ program at the Craig Newmark Graduate School of Journalism at CUNY—focuses on strengthening product strategy, technical expertise, and leadership skills through hands-on learning with industry experts.

This cohort includes 31 news product thinkers from Brazil, Canada, Chile, Finland, Germany, Ireland, Puerto Rico, Sudan, Tunisia, United Kingdom, and United States, representing roles such as Digital Growth Strategist, Product Owner, Director of Audience, and more. See the full list below.

“Our program equips participants with the product expertise needed to drive meaningful change in news organizations. By strengthening product leadership, we’re helping organizations bridge the gap between strategy and execution, ultimately serving communities more effectively while developing avenues for sustainability”, said Feli Carrique, executive director of the News Product Alliance.

Over 3.5 months, participants will explore the core principles of news product management, including audience-centric product design, iterative development, revenue generation, and stakeholder management. They will apply frameworks and product processes within their own news organizations, culminating in a final project that showcases their ability to lead strategic decision-making.

“This program is more than just training—it’s an opportunity for participants to connect with a network of peers and mentors who are shaping the future of news. The knowledge they gain here will help them drive meaningful change in their organizations and the industry at large”, said Marie Gilot, executive director for J+.

Thanks to the generous support of The John S. and James L. Knight Foundation, we were able to incorporate more product thinkers from U.S. local news, furthering our commitment to ensure building the news product talent pipeline that the industry needs to thrive.

“Product acumen is essential for sustainable journalism, and we look forward to seeing this cohort’s impact on the audiences they serve and the industry as a whole”, said Marc Lavallee, Director of Technology Product and Strategy/Journalism at Knight Foundation.

The first two NPMC cohorts have already demonstrated a transformational impact in the industry, and we’re excited to continue expanding this program. If you want to be part of a future cohort, applications open on March 31, 2025!
