The future of news is product.
We equip newsrooms to understand
what audiences need and deliver it.
Audiences now discover and use information through fragmented platforms, new formats, and AI-mediated interfaces — and that behavior keeps shifting faster than most newsrooms can respond. The News Product Alliance (NPA) is a nonprofit that helps news organizations close that gap: to understand what audiences need, translate it into strategy, and build products and services people actually use.
We do this in three ways: by connecting practitioners across the field so they don't have to figure it out alone; by training the next generation of product leaders — especially people from backgrounds that have historically been locked out of news leadership; and by working directly inside news organizations to build lasting capacity to operate as product-led organizations, keep up with what audiences need, and build sustainable revenue.
Three pillars of work:
-
NPA connects the largest network of professionals at the forefront of journalism transformation, and we work to make sure that network reflects the communities news serves. The NPA Community is a place to share what's working (or not), find the next role, and build relationships across a field that has historically excluded too many people. A stronger field starts with practitioners who don't have to figure it out alone.
-
Our first-of-its-kind certification and targeted programs build a specific, hard-to-find skill set designed for the realities of working in news: reading audience needs, translating them into product strategy, navigating the technical tradeoffs of an AI-shaped newsroom, and leading the organizational change required to act on all of it. These aren't generic product skills, as they're shaped by the ethics, culture, and constraints that make journalism distinct. We invest deliberately in practitioners from backgrounds underrepresented in news leadership, because who holds these decision-making roles shapes what gets built. The result is a pipeline of leaders newsrooms can draw on to anticipate audience shifts rather than react to them.
-
Through initiatives such as the NPAI Co-Lab or the AI-powered Next Gen News Sprint, we help news organizations turn audience understanding into strategy, establish clear priorities, and operate as product-led organizations. The goal is durable internal capacity: the ability to keep reading what audiences need and to keep building for it, long after our programs end.
