Sr. Programs Manager
Location: Remote (U.S.-based preferred)
Reports to: Programs Director
Contract: 35 hours/week
Position Overview: The News Product Alliance (NPA) is seeking a Senior Programs Manager to co-lead its growing portfolio of strategic initiatives focused on the future of the information ecosystem, audience behaviour and value creation through responsible AI adoption. This role will be responsible for managing high-impact programs. This is a senior-level role for a program manager with strategic judgment, operational rigor, and a passion for the intersection of journalism, technology, and business. You’ll report to the Programs Director and work closely with external partners, industry experts, and internal teams to lead complex programs from concept to impact.
Success in this role means you manage your programs with clarity, foresight, and strong execution. Your timelines are realistic, your collaborators feel supported, and deliverables are met without fire drills. You proactively improve systems and templates that benefit the NPA team, and you bring a clear, thoughtful voice to conversations around strategy, equity, and adoption—particularly in complex, tech-driven program areas.
Responsibilities include:
Lead high-impact programs — manage the NPAi Co-Lab and Next Gen Sprint, coordinating newsroom pilots, technical partners, and funders.
Design and oversee workflows — create timelines, RASCI charts, and clear coordination systems to keep all stakeholders aligned.
Facilitate collaboration — run partner communications, onboarding, and virtual or in-person convenings such as design sprints and advisory sessions.
Support open-source governance — organize documentation, maintain repository workflows, and ensure community participation in schema development.
Evaluate and report outcomes — collect data, develop feedback loops, and contribute to case studies and funder reports.
Contribute to organizational learning — create templates, guides, and resources that strengthen NPA’s program management infrastructure.
What You’ll Bring
Required Qualifications
5+ years experience in program or project management (nonprofit, media, or tech sector preferred).
Proven ability to lead complex programs independently, from setup to evaluation
Exceptional organizational, prioritization, and multi-tasking skills.Strong communication skills—both written and interpersonal—with external partners and internal teams.
Able to interpret technical documentation, follow GitHub workflows, and coordinate between developers and non-technical partners.
Confidence managing contractors, scheduling across time zones, and owning deadlines.
Comfortable with digital tools such as Airtable, Google Workspace, Slack, Zoom, etc.
Preferred Qualifications:
Familiarity with AI, data infrastructure, or product thinking in a media context
Experience coordinating applied learning experiences (e.g., design sprints, coaching cohorts)
Understanding of first-party data, ethical tech, or open-source project principles
Previous work in distributed teams and startup-style environments
Position Details:
Compensation: This is a 35-hour-per-week contract position, paid $40-45 per hour.
Reports to: Programs Director
Collaborates with: Senior Program Manager (peer), Communications & Engagement Manager, Executive Director, Chief Product Officer, contractors, and external partners.
