Product Manager, NPAI Co-Lab

Location: Remote, United States

Contract: Part-time, 20 hours per week

Hourly Rate: $40-$45

The News Product Alliance is a community of support and practice for news product thinkers. Our mission is to elevate the discipline of news product management and expand the diversity of news product thinkers in decision-making roles. We believe news product thinkers — those with the ability to strategically align business, audience, and technology goals while integrating journalism ethics — are key to building sustainable and ethical news organizations.

The Product Manager will be instrumental in building a collaborative journalism ecosystem through the News Product AI Collaboration Lab [NPAI Co-Lab], an initiative led by the News Product Alliance in partnership with the Patrick J. McGovern Foundation. This role will work directly with the Chief Product Officer, taking on key operational, project management, and organizational tasks to drive the program forward. By guiding a constellation of AI pilot projects that leverage first-party data, the Product Manager will foster collaboration among newsrooms, universities, and individual contributors, and in doing so, help create ethical, open-source AI tools that improve audience engagement and sustainability. The ideal candidate will have a product background, a deep interest in AI applications for journalism, and a commitment to ethical standards and practical solutions.

Essential Skills:

  • Strong facilitation and organizational skills, with the ability to manage multiple projects, prepare detailed agendas, lead discussions, and define next steps.

  • Data-driven mindset, using analytics and feedback to inform decisions and iterate on product development.

  • Exceptional communication and collaboration skills, effective in remote environments and relationship-building.

  • Adaptability and problem-solving abilities, comfortable navigating ambiguity and driving creative solutions.

  • Experience with technical projects, including the ability to apply both technical knowledge and ethical considerations in data collection, usage, and product development.

Enhancing Skills:

  • Understanding of AI technology and its applications, with a proven ability to explore new tools and solutions relevant to journalism.

  • Understanding of editorial ethics, with the ability to integrate ethical principles into AI, data collection and usage decisions, and product development.

  • Relationship-building expertise, with the ability to foster trust and collaboration with diverse stakeholders, including universities, news organizations, and individual contributors.

  • Technical proficiency, with the ability to engage in discussions about AI and data projects, translating technical requirements into actionable tasks.

  • Strong presentation skills, with the ability to publicly share project work and findings at industry events.

  • Excellent writing and editing proficiency in English, capable of contributing to the creation and refinement of resources, guides, and case studies.

  • Visionary thinking, with the ability to foresee potential challenges and pivot strategies to achieve desired outcomes.
