NPA and GDA launch training program for LatAm newsroom leaders with support from GNI

The AI Product Sprint program will empower editorial leaders to drive product innovation in their newsrooms.

The News Product Alliance is thrilled to share the launch of the Sprint de Gerencia de Productos Editoriales, a program created in collaboration with Grupo de Diarios América (GDA) and supported by the Google News Initiative

The initiative is designed to train newsroom leaders in the adoption and implementation of product practices and methodologies to leverage emerging technologies like artificial intelligence (AI).

The Sprint de Gerencia de Productos Editoriales will train 29 newsroom leaders from GDA media outlets, equipping them with the product strategy, technical expertise, and change management skills necessary to lead the development and innovation of news products.

Throughout the program developed by NPA, media leaders will receive training on how to identify audience needs and business opportunities, articulate a value proposition around them, define a product roadmap, prototype, and test new product strategies.

"Technology is advancing faster than ever, radically changing the behavior and expectations of our current and potential audiences. Media organizations need to keep pace with the  speed of editorial innovation to better serve their audiences. By combining product management with the power of artificial intelligence, this program not only fosters the development of more effective news products but also helps create more resilient media organizations by focusing on audience needs and business goals," said Felicitas Carrique, Executive Director of NPA.

The Sprint de Gerencia de Productos Editoriales will include weekly sessions, personalized coaching, and access to a global network of experts. At the end of the program, participants will receive additional support to implement the most promising products in their organizations.

“This program with NPA will not only train leaders in product methodologies and AI integration but will also strengthen the support and collaboration network that has existed for more than three decades among GDA's Latin American newsroom members," said Lyng-Hou Ramírez, Director of Content and Operations at GDA. "The support from Google News Initiative for projects that strengthen our partners’ digital transformation efforts is of great value," she added.

GDA is a consortium of 12 leading independent media outlets in the region, integrated into a network of interaction and trust that promotes sustainability and innovation through knowledge exchange, best practices, and both journalistic and business collaborations.

This program to boost leadership in Latin American journalism is supported by Google News Initiative. Haydée Bagú, News Partner Manager, said, "At Google News Initiative, we strongly believe in the importance of investing in journalists' education and knowledge. The Sprint de Gerencia de Productos Editoriales is a perfect example of how we are working to support media professionals in Latin America. By providing them with the skills and tools necessary to develop innovative news products, we are helping to strengthen the news ecosystem and ensure that citizens have access to quality information."
